There’s always a reason for behaviour, as we discussed in The Roots of Behaviour blogpost in November 2020. Understanding the function of the behaviour allows adults to teach the child more effective behaviours or coping strategies. Part of the ABC’s of Analyzing Behaviours includes understanding how the child processes sensory input, what triggers the behaviour and what the consequences of the behaviour are. A child’s arousal level at the time the behaviour occurred, and the child’s ability to self-regulate are factors that help unravel the puzzle.
Sensory Processing Disorder can be misunderstood as behaviour problems, inattention, incoordination, hypersensitivity, or emotional difficulties. If we address only the behaviour without addressing the sensory issues we often see an increase in frustration, acting out in different or more intense ways, and feelings of uneasiness.
Sensory input and sensory stimuli are all around us: things we see, hear, touch, smell, taste and movements. Many of us process sensory input everyday without thinking about it. Some children have sensory processing difficulties that cause them to react differently to sensory input. This may cause them to react with challenging or unusual behaviours to what appears to be non threatening sensory input. A child can have a big cup or a small cup for sensory input as discussed here
1. Use the Motivation Assessment Scale to determine the function of the behaviour
2.Understand how the child processes and reacts to sensory input by gathering information from parents, caregivers, and school staff. If you are a parent, share information with your occupational therapist about your child’s sensory preferences and request a Sensory Processing Measure or Sensory Profile
3.Clinical Observations of the child in a functional setting and a variety of settings. Videos from parents are also helpful.
4.When possible, a Comprehensive Sensory Assessment provides in depth information about overall sensory motor functioning.
