’Twas the week before Christmas
‘Twas the week before Christmas and all through the house, a new creature was stirring, she’s as small as a mouse!
We got a new puppy, her name is Willow. And we are 100% in love!
Is now a good time to get a puppy?
Getting a puppy during a pandemic may not be the answer for everyone. Our family had
talked about getting a puppy for over a year. We were waiting to fix our fence and then waiting to sell our house. Now, during covid, we are home and it’s a good time to be able to train our puppy, to give her attention, to mold her behaviours and to give us something positive to focus on and to love.
5 reasons a puppy is good for us:
1.SHE BRINGS US JOY
In a time when it can be hard to find the joy, we find joy in having a puppy and watching her grow. When we make her happy, she makes us happy and the cycle continues. And when she looks at us with those puppy eyes…melting and joy.
2.SHE HELPS US REGULATE PUPPIES REDUCE STRESS
Studies show that just 10 minutes petting a dog can have a significant impact on reducing stress. Study participants had a significant reduction in cortisol, a major stress hormone. In 2 days I’ve had hours of cuddles and petting. I feel less stressed, and it’s the holidays, a time when my cortisol levels tend to be heightened.
3.PUPPIES ARE GOOD FOR DEVELOPMENT
Studies show that pet ownership may be beneficial to child and adolescent emotional, cognitive, behavioural, educational and social development. I can already see increased empathy, responsibility, calmness and curiosity in my own kids.
4.SHE BRINGS US TOGETHER, WE WORK TOGETHER TO TAKE CARE OF HER.
Bonding over a puppy makes the puppy feel loved and increases seratonin, dopamine, and oxytocin in the owners. Oxytocin, dopamine, and serotonin are often referred to as our “happy hormones.” When you’re attracted to another person (or a puppy), your brain releases dopamine, your serotonin levels increase, and oxytocin is produced. This causes you to feel a surge of positive emotion.
5.GOOD FOR HEART AND MENTAL HEALTH.
A puppy is good for our mental health and overall health. We feel less alone, knowing we have a companion in the house with us. I don’t think i need to talk about the benefits of exercise. A puppy also promotes a sense of play and fun!
I’m not saying you all need to go out and get a puppy but I’m sure excited about Christmas with our puppy!
